Zakkendragershuisje

(The Sack Bearers House)

This simple, yet beautifully preserved building was built in 1765. Above the lintel is a plaque showing a sack bearer and the names of the then Board of Directors of the Sack Bearers Guild.

In the olden days, the Guildhall was the main meeting-point for the sack bearers. Whenever a ship arrived in the habour and had to be unloaded a bell was rung. At the sound of the ringing bell, the sack bearers proceeded to the Guildhall.

If too many sack bearers showed up, their luck was at the mercy of the role of a dice!! This form of gambling was called 'smakken' (flinging) and took place in the so-called 'fling bin', which can still be seen today in the historical collection in the Council Museum.
