Het Schuurkerkje

(The Barn Church)

The Barn Church dates back to 1787 and was built for the Roman Catholic parish of Maassluis. It was supposedly built as a 'conventicle' (a secret meeting-place used by dissenters from the established church for religious worship).

Prior to the building of the Barn Church, the residents of Maassluis attended church in the neighbouring village of Maasland. In 1984 the church was thoroughly restored and given a new cultural purpose: that of a theatre.

Next to the Barn Church is a vicarage, built in 1790, which was once situated on the main road. At that time it hid the view of the church from passers-by.
