De School van 'Mesjeu' Van Dalen

("Monsieur" Van Dalen's School)

This 17th century building boasts a plaited gable and an old shopfront. It is thought that the school was probably built between 1574 and 1628.

The beautiful old facade, complemented by nine decorative beams, is similar to the magnificent stepped gables found in Amsterdam. Over the years, many mayors and aldermen have occupied this building. In 1860 Monsieur Van Dalen opened the first Christian school in Maassluis. He began with an enrolment of only 63 students. In 1906 the school was relocated to the Lange Boonestraat (Long Boone Street) and the name was changed to the Dr. Kuyperschool (Dr. Kuyper School).

The old school building was taken over in 1936 by the De Groot family who began a printing and publishing company. In the same year the first edition of the 'De Schakel' ("The Link") appeared. Years later, this local paper is still being published on a bi-weekly basis.

In the meantime, the printers have relocated to other, more spacious, premises. Nevertheless, this property still bears the the name of the founding father of the family printing business: the Arie de Groot House
(Arie de Groothuis).
